The year was 2004, the host was Brett Lindros, and the player/part-time cowboy was Shane Doan.
"My whole family, you're either a cowboy or a hockey player – and I'm not tough enough to be a cowboy," Doan quips at Lindros before the pair hit the dusty trail in this week's episode.
Doan, the former Coyotes captain and fan favourite, chats about growing up ranching with his family in Halkirk, Alberta – population of 112 as of 2016. Doan expands on becoming team captain, the desert life, and his transformation from a penalty box-regular to a play-making contributor.

Doan, who served as Coyotes captain for his final 13 NHL seasons, retired as the team’s all-time leader in games played (1,540), goals (402), assists (570), points (972), power-play goals (128) and game-winning goals (69). He sent his entire 21-season career with the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona franchise.
The two-time NHL All-Star retired in 2017, and joined the NHL's hockey operations department shortly thereafter in October of that year.

The legacy he left behind extended past Gila River Arena and franchise record books, and into the future generations of the game – as evidenced by young stand-out and Arizona-raised Auston Mathews, who looked up to Doan as a youngster.
