NHLPA raises over $250,000 for SickKids through Jersey Auction

Over 200 game-worn jerseys were recently auctioned by the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), raising more than $250,000 in support of children’s health at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

Funds raised through this auction support the highest priority needs at SickKids, the most flexible source of funding for the hospital with the greatest potential to transform children’s health.

To mark the occasion, SickKids Foundation staff and patient families were joined this afternoon for the official cheque presentation at the hospital by forward James van Riemsdyk of the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as Mathieu Schneider, NHLPA Special Assistant to the Executive Director.

The NHLPA’s jersey vault was opened up for the auction, which consisted of never-before available, game-worn jerseys from historic hockey events spanning the last 20 years, including World Cup of Hockey and Olympic tournaments, and All-Star and outdoor games. The online auction was conducted and fulfilled by Montreal-based Classic Auctions.

“We rely on the generous support of the community and are grateful to the NHLPA and the players’ loyal fans for this initiative,” said Paula Menzes, Director, Sponsorship and Cause Marketing, Corporate Partnerships at SickKids Foundation. “The funds raised from their auction will help SickKids continue to fund the fight against the greatest challenges in child health for our patients and their families.”

“The players were pleased to be able to offer up these jerseys for auction to fans, in support of the efforts at SickKids, and we are all thrilled that over $200,000 was raised,” said Mathieu Schneider.

“SickKids is a special place, and we are thankful to everyone who helped such a great cause. These jerseys each represented a small part of hockey history that is meaningful to the fans who bought them, while benefiting children’s health.”

Jonathan Toews’ jerseys were highly sought after in the auction; his two jerseys alone raised a combined $12,486, garnering the most funds for the cause. His 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Team Canada jersey went for $7,423, while his 2009 NHL All-Star Game jersey sold for $5,063.
