Hartnell on Dealing With Benching

Scott Hartnell definitely knows what it’s like to get benched by the coach – even after scoring a career high 37 goals in the 2011/12 season.

The most important thing to understand when you get benched is "why" and work with your coach to improve your play to avoid it in the future.

All hockey players make mistakes. Like many sports, the team that minimizes the amount of mistakes is the team that wins. It’s no surprise that learning from our mistakes and improving our future efforts is one of the most important ways we can contribute to the team.

Take this approach the next time you find yourself benched and you’ll be a better player for it in the long run.
