After two days of hint dropping and excitement stirring, the secret was finally revealed. Last Thursday at Yonge and Dundas Square in downtown Toronto, hundreds of lucky fans were treated to a free lunch thanks to Visa Canada’s Visa payWave Challenge. NHL players Alex Burrows and Jake Gardiner went head-to-head to see who could pay for the most lunches in one hour using Visa’s payWave to help them pay faster. Each player teamed up with a Toronto food truck heavyweight, Burrows with Hogtown Smoke and Gardiner with Fidel Gastros.
After a quick warm up and introduction to the crowd by “referee” Cabbie Richards, hundreds of hungry fans formed two lines as they waited to give their lunch orders to the NHL stars.
As they paid for meal after meal, both Gardiner and Burrows got to meet and greet fans hoping for autographs and photos.
Early into the challenge Gardiner had a solid lead, but Burrows and Hogtown Smoke picked up the pace towards the end of the hour to emerge victorious with a final score of 363-320.
