Karlsson and Pastrnak place among top-three vote-getters as TLA finalists
NASHVILLE (June 26, 2023) – The National Hockey League Players’ Association announced today forward Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers has received the players’ vote as the recipient of the 2022-23 Ted Lindsay Award. The TLA is presented “to the most outstanding player in the NHL,” as voted by fellow members of the NHLPA. This season marks the 52nd season of the award.
McDavid becomes only the third four-time recipient in the award’s history, after also receiving the TLA in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2020-21 – joining Wayne Gretzky (five-time recipient) and Mario Lemieux (four-time recipient). He also previously finished as a finalist twice (2018-19 and 2021-22).
The 2022-23 TLA recipient was presented tonight during the 2023 NHL Awards in Nashville. Defenceman Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks and forward David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins were both first-time finalists for the TLA this season. The NHLPA membership voted on the most outstanding player at the end of the regular season, and the top three vote-getters were subsequently announced as finalists for the 2022-23 TLA. Karlsson became the first defenceman in 31 years to record 100 points in a season, while Pastrnak finished third in league scoring for the record-setting Bruins.
McDavid won his fifth Art Ross Trophy by leading the league with 153 points – 30 points more than his career high set last season. The Oilers captain from Newmarket, Ontario, became the first skater in 27 years (Lemieux, 1995-96) to score 150 points, and only the sixth different skater (also Gretzky, Lemieux, Phil Esposito, Bernie Nicholls and Steve Yzerman) to achieve the feat. McDavid scored 64 goals to win his first Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy and paced all skaters with 89 assists – setting new career highs. The 26-year-old forward paced all scorers in power-play points (71), while leading the Oilers to the most efficient power-play in league history (32.4%). McDavid also finished first in time on ice per game played among forwards (22:23), tied for first in primary assists (60), and he placed third in shots (352), even-strength goals (39) and even-strength points (75).

The Ted Lindsay Award is unique as the only award voted on by the players themselves, carrying on the tradition established in 1970-71 with the Lester B. Pearson Award. NHLPA members annually vote on the player they deem to be the most outstanding in the NHL regular season. The award was reintroduced in 2009-10 as the namesake of the late Ted Lindsay to honour his legacy as a Hall of Fame forward known for skill, tenacity, leadership and his role in establishing the original Players’ Association.
