10 In 10
In 2009, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) commemorated the 10th anniversary of the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund with a 10-day, 10-country celebration of grassroots hockey programs.
Goals & Dreams ambassadors undertook this meaningful journey of 10 countries in 10 days to highlight a decade’s worth of program achievements, and to donate 360 sets of hockey equipment, valued around $180,000, to local hockey programs around the world.
The 10 in 10 tour kicked off in Sweden on November 13th and wrapped up in Canada on November 22nd:
|Day 1: Ornskoldsvik, Sweden||Day 5: Prague, Czech Republic||Day 9: New York, USA|
|Day 2: Helsinki, Finland||Day 6: Trnava, Slovakia||Day 10: Toronto, Canada|
|Day 3: Moscow, Russia||Day 7: Sarajevo, Bosnia|
|Day 4:Riga, Latvia||Day 8: Frankfurt, Germany|
Over its first 10 years, the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund helped more than 40,000 children through grants and equipment donations. Goals & Dreams has enabled NHLPA members to give back to the game they love, and share with deserving children the joy of feeling their skate blades glide across fresh ice and bulge the twine of a net with a wrist shot.
The 10 in 10 travelling crew was joined by a number of former NHL players eager to give back to grassroots programs in their native lands. Participating players included Markus Naslund, Jon Sim, Pavel Bure, Jyrki Lumme, and Esa Tikkanen.
Check out the video re-cap of the experience:
“I’ve had the pleasure over the years of being able to get involved with the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund and to have a tour like this is a real symbol of all the good that has been done. To see the kids today with their equipment and the smiles on their faces makes you realize how worthwhile it is.” – Markus Naslund
