San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks made a trade on Sunday, acquiring defenseman Niclas Wallin and a fifth-round pick in the 2010 draft from the Carolina Hurricanes for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft.

Wallin, a nine-year veteran, has five assists in 47 games with Carolina this season.

In 517 games in the NHL, all with Carolina, he has 18 goals and 51 assists. He won a Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Hurricanes.

"Niclas is a playoff-hardened, veteran player with lots of postseason experience and a Stanley Cup ring," said San Jose general manager Doug Wilson. "Good, solid character players are hard to come by and we think he will complement our existing group very well. He has a history of playing his best when the games mean the most."

The pick that San Jose is sending to Carolina was acquired from Buffalo in a previous trade.
