Activa Global Promotions is an international partner of the NHLPA specializing in the manufacture and distribution of collectible programs through self-liquidating continuity distribution. Activa has created collectible programs featuring products such as pins, medallions, miniature hockey pucks and stickers. Activa is also a producer of numerous NHLPA-licensed novelty items including drinkware, sticker sheets and other fan souvenirs.
Frameworth is an NHLPA-licensed manufacturer of framed and plaqued player collectibles and photo artwork. In addition Frameworth has a number of plaqued gifts including wall clocks and game-boards. Frameworth sells direct and through many retail partners coast-to-coast but also features a showroom at its main headquarters that is a must-see for any hockey fan living in or visiting Toronto.
Highland Mint is known internationally for their wide variety of medallions and framed collectibles, including the popular Photo Mint products. Among its most popular NHL player offerings are a framed and matted photo with a swatch of game-used goal net from a major event that player took part in. Since 1999, McFarlane Toys has been an NHLPA licensee specializing in highly-detailed plastic replica figures of the NHL's biggest stars. AllStarLineup produces products in the personalized gift and print market, including a wide variety of NHL action images that puts the fan right into the action with his or her favourite stars. MDI Entertainment is a producer of scratch tickets and games for government-operated lottery programs. The company has produced tickets featuring NHLPA members from Raleigh, North Carolina to Stockholm, Sweden.
MVP Pics
MVP Pics is famous for the ever-popular personalized locker-room print where a fan can place their name on the back of a jersey in their favourite team's lockerroom next to their NHL heroes. MVP Pics prints are available in a number of formats, and can be purchased on-line and in many photo-lab outlets across Canada and the U.S.
Panini is the world-wide leader in collectible sticker albums and has a history of producing annual NHL player albums dating back to the 1990s. Panini has also conducted numerous promotional campaigns with its sticker products, and distributes NHL star stickers in both Europe and North America.
Photo File has long been the industry standard in flat glossy player action photos. Photo File has been printing player photos since the early 1990s. Trends has been with the NHLPA since the 1990s has has been the leader in player poster products since. They have also serviced the calendar category well with numerous teams in a variety of sizes and formats.
Turner Licensing, a division of Lang Holdings Inc is a leader in printed products among pro sports in North America. Turner has produced NHL team and player calendars since 2000, and continues to grow the category with first-rate quality and distribution. Turner is also licensed to produce back-to-school notebooks and portfolios.
Trading Cards
Upper Deck is the exclusive manufacturer of NHLPA-licensed hockey trading cards. An NHLPA licensee since 1990, Upper Deck was a revolutionary force when it catapulted to the top of the booming trading card industry just a year earlier with its inaugural Major League Baseball release. In 2005-06 the NHLPA and Upper Deck announced they had entered into an exclusive partnership that would make Upper Deck the sole manufacturer of NHL player cards and also produce the Be A Player brand of trading cards. Also in 2005, Upper Deck acquired the assets to Fleer/Skybox, allowing the Fleer name to be reintroduced to hockey fans and collectors who enjoyed collecting those brands in the 1990s. Upper Deck has also since licensed the O-Pee-Chee brand returning it to the die-hard collectors who enjoyed it for decades in Canada and elsewhere. Leading Upper Deck Hockey brands such as SP Authentic, Victory, Black Diamond, The Cup and the Upper Deck Series 1 and 2 releases, are highlights on any collector's annual calendar. Upper Deck also produces NHL player collectibles such as the All-Star Vinyl series and many other framed and limited edition collectibles.
Video Games
Electronic Arts (EA) is an international developer, publisher and distributor of some of the world's leading interactive software products. EA has been a partner with the NHLPA since 1992 when it released "NHLPA Hockey 93" - still considered among the classic games of the generation, and immortalized in a scene in the 1997 film "Swingers". The following year saw the introduction of the first EA game fully licensed by both the NHL and NHLPA, "NHL 94". This game still rates among the most popular sports video games of all-time. EA has continued to release an annual NHLPA-licensed simulation hockey title worldwide every year since, and annually receives top reviews for its improvements in gameplay, AI and other simulation features. In the September, 2008, they released NHL 2009 featuring Calgary defenceman Dion Phaneuf on the North American cover. The title was voted Sports Video Game of the Year by 10 top industry sources including GameSpot, IGN and Spike TV. Humongous Inc is publisher of the popular "Backyard Sports" series of software for kids. The Backyard Hockey brand is unique in that it is the only product licensed by the NHLPA that features stars of the game animated as little kids themselves! The real players join up with the characters in the game to create a fun backyard-style shinny atmosphere, with easy controls and fair play stressed. In addition to quick games on various creative ice-rink backdrops, Backyard Hockey also features mini-games and skill challenges. Nicklas Lidstrom is the cover star for the series, currently available on Nintendo DS.
Take-Two is an industry leader in interactive software for gaming consoles and on-line play worldwide. Their 2K series has been a cutting-edge product since 2000 when it debuted on the Sega Dreamcast console. Though the Dreamcast was all but gone within a few years, the 2K series has been successful on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo platforms ever since, and in 2008-09 NHL 2K9 became the first true simulation hockey video game to debut on the Nintendo Wii. Though the key elements such as team management are there for the hard-core gamers, the 2K game also has options for the more casual pick-up-and-play gamer, as stressed in the advertising for 2K9. Among the NHLers to star as the highlight for the 2K series in recent years are: Jeremy Roenick, Martin St. Louis, Joe Thornton and Rick Nash.
